Prayer Blanket Ministry
In 2009, the St. James Lutheran congregation felt there was a need to reach members and the wider
community with prayers, when an individual or family was going through health issues or dealing with a
death. Under the direction of Jan Cressman-Weiss, the Prayer Blanket Ministry was created.
A request for a Prayer Blanket can be accepted from the St. James members or the local community
who feel that an individual is in need of prayers at a difficult time in their lives.
Each blanket is made with 12” x 12” squares, prayerfully made and donated by the St. James or
community individuals. The squares are knitted or crocheted with the name of the person who
completed it attached. Each blanket is personalized with the recipient’s name in a square created by
Miriam Gole, with their favorite colours or interests in mind. The squares are then arranged by Jan
Cressman-Weiss and assembled into a blanket by Phyllis Montgomery or Carol Wilkins. Each blanket
takes approximately one month to complete, however if an emergency situation should arise this can be
The finished blanket is blessed during a Sunday morning service, at St. James Lutheran by Pastor
Bonnie Schelter-Brown, before being delivered to the recipient. Each blanket provides comfort and
encouragement to the ailing or grieving individual.
St. James members can follow the Prayer Blanket Ministry in the church newsletter “Proclamation” by
reviewing blankets in the works, those completed and the thank you notes from recipients.
Over 500 blankets have been completed to date with some being sent as far as California. Photos of
each blanket are catalogued in a scrap book by Alison Rodger.
